I absolutely love it. ;) A classic, underused given name with a quirky-cool nickname? Nothing wrong with that.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't put much stock in the meaning, since it's debated anyway. Behind the Name (the most accurate site I'm aware of) says it could be from a Roman family name possibly taken from the Latin cassus, meaning "empty or vain," but the "possibly" is right there. Not a definite etymology. Likewise, the fact that "empty" is mentioned, holding equal footing, makes it quite clear these were terms meant to refer to an inanimate vessel, not actual personal attributes. In other words, not vanity in the sense of someone full of themself, but rather to imply, well, emptiness (of a jar, bowl, room, etc.). Hopefully that makes sense.
And of course, you could always simply site the fact that Cassius was the name of at least four different saints, rather than the literal, not-at-all solid meaning. ;)
Hope that helps!
What do you think of the name Cassius for a boy? (pronounced CASH-us) With the nickname "Cash"???
You're welcome. ;) And if you happen to read this, just wanted to mention that a less-expected choice like Cassius would be wonderful with a mother named Gaia (if that's your name). I simply overlooked it the first time, or I'd have mentioned it then. ;) Very fitting. Report Abuse
Reply:I think it is a very cool name, but every time I hear it, I think of Muhammad Ali. (the boxer)
The meaning may not matter to most... but he may not appreciate it later on in life. Because eventually, we all learn what our name meant, ya know?
Reply:I love Cassius, but pronounced Cass-ee-us... I thought the meaning was strong?
Reply:i love it!
Reply:oh.... not to be rude or anything, but i dont really like it...
Reply:I love the name Cash. Just Cash, no Cassius. I think it's really cool, my friend's named Cash Ryder Thompson and I love it! So yeah, go with it =]
Reply:is looks like it should be pronouned cassie-us...
Reply:It's a cute name but when he gets to school you can bet he's going to be teased. "Got any CASH on you?" "Give me all your CASH" "Did you CASH my check?" and so on. You know kids can be mean.
Reply:I like Cassius.
While the meaning isn't great, you might look to some of the historical Cassiuses for inspiration. It's a saint's name, an ancient Roman family name and, of course, the boxer Muhammed Ali's given name. It isn't as if you're naming your son Empty James Smith or Hollow Andrew Williams. It's a valid name, and others have worn in throughout the ages. I'd use it without reservation.
Cash makes for a great nickname, too.
Reply:I wouldn't care what the meaning is .. in fact we have names picked for a boy and a girl but never even looked at the meanings.. now you have me curious though.
as for if I like the name.. well, not particularly.. but who the hell cares what I think.. Its your baby!
Reply:Bear in mind that children can be mean, so be prepared to deal with that, especially if they find out the meaning of the name.
Personally, though, I think it's a nifty sounding name, and not one you see often.
Reply:I really love the name, always have. Think Cash is a great nickname. Don't worry about the meaning...really, how many people name their kids based on meaning? Obviously not the people on here with made up crazy cartoon names. Cassius is very cool, classic. Do a little more research and I bet you can find more symbolism to the meaning of the name.
Reply:I would just use Cash because I think it sounds better than Cassius which would never be used cause he would have the nickname Cash!
Reply:I like it, reminds me of the boy from Gladiator. I don't necessarily like Cash as a nickname but hey, that's not my concern, lol. I wouldn't hold too much merit to the meaning of the name. Your son can give it a positive meaning with his personality! Under the meaning I looked up it also said "Four early saints had this name. Also, it was the original first name of boxer Muhammad Ali." so it's not all bad news!
Reply:Well.. I'm not really sure about the name because of its meaning. Since I was a child, people have told me that your name is what makes you who you are. For instance, my sister's name is Mary Joyce. Mary was because she was born in September which is mother Mary's month. Joyce was because she was born on a Thursday which is, in the rosary, Joyful Mysteries. My dad's name is Rey which means king. My name is Andre Marie which I'm not sure about because Andre means manly or something like that and I'm a girl. My dad got my name from an Encyclopedia.
Reply:I think it is a cool name and I wouldn't worry so much about the meaning.
Reply:i like it - it sounds very roman and authorative. don't take much out of the meaning - my name means gift of god and im not christian!
=)
Reply:Dignified. However, everyone will call him Ali.
Reply:Yeah, Muhammad Ali comes to mind. Don't like it. I do think meaning is important. I think it's nice give your child a name that means something special to your family or a good family name. But hey, to each their own, it's your baby.
